Bah Humug (a venting session)

Not to be all "bah humbug," but... well, bah humbug.  I am not a big holiday season person to begin with, but this holiday season has been just bleh.  Don't get me wrong, i am very excited to see my daughters open their presents from Santa on Christmas morning, and I am very excited for a four day weekend filled with friends and family, but ugh the stress leading up to Christmas just sucks. Too many expectations, too much money spent, too much to DO!  It doesn't help that for the past month, at least one member of my family has been sick at all times. Last week, I was knocked out by a massive head cold for a good five days. It was awful.  It also doesn't help that work is nailing me right now, and I have a huge vacation planned for the first ten days of the year which means approximately 5,987 things on my "to do" list.  In summary: meh.

Okay, I'm done with my venting. At least I love my outfit today! Merry Christmas y'all!

Winter Casual

Bring on the faux fur!  Admittedly, the whole Uggs/shearling in California thing is totally pretentious given there's uh, no snow, and it's never really below 65.  But faux fur looks fab, and you can't hate a girl for the envy.

This is my last casual Friday in 2014!  For the first time in 3.5 years, and my first time with my firm, I'm taking a proper vacay.  (I know, I know.  Austin, New York, Aspen, all those weekend trips... but this isn't a day tacked onto a weekend.  I'm gone!)  I won't be here for 10 days or so and the idea of leaving everyday work tasks isn't as amazing as I thought it'd be.  Once I move past the anxiety (which may or may not take like two minutes once I get to LAX, passport in hand), I will revel in the idea of being detached and far away.

On that note, all the more reason to rock the faux fur and shearling.  Vi and I went to Target to buy Christmas essentials, and stopped by this really weird social media spot.  More to come later on these Matt Bernson Tundras.  I plan to wear them all over Taiwan.

Holiday Duty

It's that time of year!  The Employment Team 2012 holiday whatever-it-is.  Nobody showed up festive.  Christmas was hardly mentioned.  Or holiday plans.  It was just four lawyers having a quick lunch at a new restaurant.  The important thing is that we made it happen.

And, of course, being able to post together.  Yes!

Paloma says...

Black and white and red will always and forever be my fall-back color combo.  It is also very appropriate around the holidays, so it works out quite well for our holiday lunch/gathering/whatever.  I have been feeling the need to keep my wardrobe more simple lately; just have been gravitating toward basics more and more. I'd like to say this is because as I get older I have a more classic and simple wardrobe, but I think its really the 4,876 item to-do list and the madness of the holidays that has me in this "who cares what i wear, cant it just be all black?" mood.

Sourcing from my amazing besties today, Cynthia and Emily.  We had our own little holiday do over the weekend before everyone travels at the end of the year.  Cyn gifted me this perfect necklace; Em gifted me the sleek Alexander Wang-inspired jacket from Japan.  Mondays are best when you have something new to wear!  Also hauled out the furry coat, it's going to be rainy and in the 60's this week...

And, of course, although it's ever so hard to schedule, it's wonderful to party like it's 2012 again and lunch with Paloma, Jamie, and Steve.  I love getting our photos together.  Truth.  Fact.  'Nuff said.

Maroon Pants and a Bandage

Maroon (oxblood? port? wine?) colored pants forever!  I can't believe I went so long without owning pants in this shade - I could wear them every day!  Paired with a cozy sweater for a long day of sitting at my desk and plugging away at a zillion tasks.  Oh, and also having a (very) minor medical procedure on my hand this morning - excuse the bandage!

Wear It Wednesday: Kelly Green

It's Wear it Wednesday again!  And once again, we are both rocking the same item or style to see two takes on it.  Today: kelly green... at least, I think this is kelly green.

Karen says...

Thoughts on this outfit:

  • I was experimenting with a new curling iron today, thus the big, loose waves;
  • There are mini shoulder pads in this Zara jacket, what I like to call my "Joan Crawford" look;
  • This is totally a kelly green racerback tank, which is why I've kept on my Joan Crawford blazer all day.

I love J.Crew pencil skirts, and this one in particular because this kelly green is just so darn cheery, and livens up any outfit.  Anyway, here's how I styled it today....with neutrals, neutrals, neutrals.

Normcore Envy

Mondays are ever so much more bearable when you can go casual.  Still in Austin mode, I think, and I originally wore some ankle boots to work.  There was the denim, and there had been a colorful scarf.  But then my Black Friday purchases were waiting in my office, and when I put on the sneakers - bam!  Normcore!

Well, not really, but I will fully confess that I picked out these New Balance sneaks in the hope of creating one or two normcore looks.  Is it really me?  No.  But come on, a girl can try.

South By Southwest: Austin

I quite literally went South by Southwest by going to the University of Texas, Austin to see The Making of Gone With the Wind exhibit at the Harry Ransom Center.  It's the 75th anniversary of the movie (oh my God, I remember buying the 50th anniversary edition!), and this momentous birthday is more than reason enough for this magnificently curated exhibit of Scarlett's best dresses and David O. Selznick's voluminous papers chronicling the making of the film.  I am the ultimate classic film geek (among many other nerdy things, I'm afraid), and I could not believe my good fortune in going to Austin for my best friend Reyna's bachelorette party at the same time of the exhibition.

I mean, this is a workwear blog, right?  And workwear are clothes, and clothes are fashion, right?  These gowns most certainly have nothing to do with work, but they have everything to do with fashion.  And there is nothing more fashionable than Scarlett O'Hara.  So not only must I share with you these showstopping dresses, but I must advertise this exhibit here so that you really will go see all of this on your own.  With one look you are transported to so much more than the glamour of 19th-century dress, but really to the golden era of filmmaking and the richness of fabric and detail that is everything we love about fashion.  In fact, I was struck by the fact that really these costumes were the luscious late-30's more than they were the austere 1860's.  If you're a "Windie" like me (I know, eyeroll, ha!), you know that Walter Plunkett designed these spectacular pieces.

And here they are, in order of appearance in the film...

Scarlett's Curtain Dress

This one had faded quite a bit, and was probably the most exhibited dress from the film.
In the bit of cloth by the longer tassel, you can see the original color of the dress.
As you can imagine, despite the enormous skirt, the bodice and sleeves were quite
petite for the very dainty Vivien Leigh.

Scarlett's Red Party Dress

This was "the" dress for all of us, right?  This was actually the only dress from the book that
was not green - so infatuated was Margaret Mitchell, unintentionally even, by Scarlett's green
eyes and her dresses to match.  But the scene called for Scarlett to arrive in notorious
fashion - and as we know, there is nothing more dangerous than a lady in red.
This dress was immaculately preserved and every bit as lush as you'd expect.

This was the treat of all treats for me.  You never see the back of the dress in the movie.
It's on Scarlett, and in the next scene, it's in a pile in her boudoir.
So to see the back of this in all its splendor - wow.

Scarlett's Green Peignoir

Did they really wear this in the late 1860's?  This dressing gown is everything decadent
about Scarlett's post-war life.  As beautiful as this dress is, it makes me a little sad
because Scarlett and Rhett end up having a nasty argument in this scene.  Ha.
The detail here is brilliant, and once again, Ms. Leigh lived up to Scarlett's small waist...

Scarlett's Blue Velvet Robe

Once again, not an actual dress imagined by Margaret Mitchell, everything here is
pure Plunkett.  This might have been the most perfectly preserved piece - you wanted to
run your hands all over the fur and velvet.  Again, another sad outfit really because...
well, no spoiler alert here.  Scarlett recuperates in style.

And as for Austin?  Well, this wall on South Congress says it all.

The Return of Casual December

Boy, do I wish I could have gotten a better photo of this outfit!  After starting the first two days of the month in deposition and client meetings, I couldn't wait to get into my casual gear for the return of Casual December.  It's not a total free for all, you're only allowed to go casual with a donation of a new toy or $5.  It's a costly effort, but man, I will do anything to be comfortable.  And wear Black Friday stuff I bought.

What I really wanted to showcase were these DWP for Scoop NYC Frida Tencel Chino Joggers!  (Designed by Gwen Stefani, how cool!)  Yes, I got asked today, "Are you wearing sweats?"  It's a fine, fine line... The elastic cuff, slub fit, and taper are hard to digest.  But thankfully one or two fashionista co-workers totally "got" it, and that's all that mattered...

Productive and Positive

Back to work! I always find the first day back at work after a vacation to be on the one hand depressing (ugh, so much work!) and on the other hand, productive and positive (I am so rested, look how much work I can get done!).  Today is feeling more productive than depressing, thankfully. It doesn't hurt that the L.A. weather has been divine today - rainy and chilly.  Love it.

Modern Victorian

Lately, I've been spending a bit too much time on the Forever 21 website - the slippery slope of fashion.  You head on there to buy something either crazy basic or trendy, and you end up piling up a shopping cart full of $15.80 odds and ends.  But, I should be totally unapologetic about this because I really think they have stepped up their game and not the prices, so who can argue with that?

Nota bene: the models for Forever 21 and Revolve are pretty damn good, extremely persuasive, and I am a sucker each and every time thinking I will look the way they do.  Well played, F21 and Revolve.

As for this dress, it was another Forever 21 impulse buy that I thought was the neatest little spin on modern Victorian.  And plenty forgiving following our Thanksgiving luncheon today, where yours truly had an extra carrot souffle.

We had a potluck turkey lunch at work today, in honor of Thanksgiving.  And boy oh boy was that bad for my afternoon productivity.  Zzzzzz....  Thank goodness I wore stretchy pants!

Wear It... Thursday?

Headed to a networking event today, but didn't quite want to wear a suit, so I just went with black and blazer.  In fact, this is the third day this week that I have worn all black and I'm wondering at what point I turned into Johnny Cash.

Anyway, I notice that Paloma and I got the memo for Thursday and are both doing blacks and whites and grays!  In fact, earlier today I had another shirt layered over the lacy black one, then changed my mind and pared it down... Uncanny, how much we think alike.  And how often.

Wee Bit Festive

As much as I try to fight it, the holiday season is upon us.  Seriously,  does this start earlier every year?? I will say, I do love Thanksgiving, however.  Who wouldn't love a holiday whose entire focus is to be with the ones you love while you eat and relax?

Anyway, the point is that it feels like its about time to bust out my beloved wool/sparkle pencil skirt.  It's hard to tell in this first shot, but its woven with some gold shiny threads into the black wool and it makes what would be a plain ole pencil skirt just a wee bit more interesting and festive.

Wear It Wednesday: Shirt + Sweater

It's Wear it Wednesday again!  And once again, we are both rocking the same item or style to see two takes on it.  Today: shirt + sweater!

Paloma says...

Fall is here! Forecast of mid-70s for the next week! Huzzah! Guess that means its time to bust out the layers and sweaters.... right?! (I can feel the entire Northeast section of the country shaking their heads at me). In other news - this shirt is quite possibly the softest and greatest shirt ever. Oh, J.Crew, you can do no wrong.

Today's WIW pick was an excuse to force myself to put some pieces together, rather than throw on a dress or throw on my usual blouse and skirt.  It just hasn't gotten cold around here (with Christmas around the corner), but mercifully, it is cool enough to wear two layers.  I am forcing myself to repurpose purchases from last year and the year before and, of course, that means more mixing and matching.  Discipline, Karen!  No more shopping!  (At least until Black Friday!)

Simple Monday

Nothing better than a weekend with some of your oldest and dearest girlfriends in the world to make you feel totally rejuvenated.  And also really damn tired on Monday.  Too much wine, too many late nights!  In any event, I kept it simple today in a short-sleeve sweater and one of my favorite pencil skirts (it has tuxedo stripes - too lazy/busy to get a good picture of them) that I haven't busted out since last winter.

Wear It Wednesday: Dress + Boots

Karen says...

Ah, I am the lone poster this Wednesday since Paloma is working from home and has no need to don a dress and ankle boots.  It's just as well, as Paloma isn't inclined to wear ankle boots/booties to work on Wednesday (she'll do it on a Friday).

Busy times round these parts, lots of meetings, lots of reports due.  But it's Wednesday, and I'm having fun mixing patterns, shapes, and colors!

On balance, without Paloma, this does not turn out to be a WIW challenge, just my outfit for today.

Head to Toe

I have long proclaimed my love for J.Crew's "Tippi" sweater - I have it in three colors but would love to own a zillion more.  So I was eager to try out J.Crew Factory's alternative, the "Charley" sweater.  I bought this lovely one back in September (pre-shopping ban) and am finally wearing it since the weather is cooperating and acting like fall!  I must say, I think I might like it more than Tippi! Its a wee bit looser and more relaxed which I think I like.

Anyway, my beloved friend Maggie knew I bought this sweater (because I pretty much run all my clothing purchases by her, which is totally not weird), and she suggested that I wear it with this purple skirt.  Good call, Mags!

Also... wearing head to toe J.Crew Factory today...

Wear It Wednesday: Pink & Red

It's Wear it Wednesday again! And once again, we are both rocking the same item or style to see two takes on it.  Today: pink and red!

Paloma says...

I love color. As is obvious to anyone who reads this blog.  And I REALLY love this color combo.  Though its not one that I wear it too often.  In fact, the only other time I can think of was waaaaay back in 2012 in our second post EVER.  Today's outfit was straight up ripped off from Veronika (she does good work wear, that girl!) and this outfit which I have been meaning to copy for ages.  Today is the day, folks. Today is the day.

Also, I want to point out that I am wearing turquoise earrings (YES MORE COLOR), but after several failed attempts at a decent up-close selfie to capture them I decided to just tell you about them.

Karen says...

My love for pink and red together is eternal, sprung from the very moment I watched Marilyn's Lorelei Lee in "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.  When Paloma suggested Pink & Red for today - loved it!

I've also been fantasizing about mixing fuschia with burgundy, which Paloma very closely achieves here... Since I had a meeting today, I had to keep it somewhat subtle, and that's how we end up with the red blouse and pink shoes.

Oh yes, and we lopped off some locks yesterday - thanks to Tamara at Perry McGrath!

Ain't Mad Atcha

So if you follow us on instagram (@ninethirtytofive) you probably saw my post this morning in which I lamented that Stitch Fix totally ruined my "no shopping" streak.  In the beginning of October, I made a resolution to not shop for clothes for the remainder of 2014... but totally forgot that I had a Stitch Fix box scheduled to land on my doorstep the first week of November. Gah! So of course I was stoked when I got the box, but also wary... I knew I would love at least an item or two, and it would be oh-so-sad to lose that $20 styling fee by sending back the whole box.  So, of course, I fell in love with everything in the box.  But I used my super will power to send back all but one item - this dress.  It's super lovely, super comfy, super awesome.  Even though it was responsible for me breaking my no-shopping streak.  It's OK, dress. I ain't mad atcha.

And here she is without the cardigan....(side note - about 4 people today commented that I looked "so short" without my heels... flats are really a rarity for me! And honestly I kinda wish i were wearing heels with this, think it would have looked better)

And of course, the most important accessory of the day... my "I voted" sticker. Vote, peeps! :)

Maroon, Again.

I am making the weirdest face in this picture but oh man was i NOT in the mood for picture taking today. My husband is out of town for a week and a half and when I'm solo parenting for that long, this is the kind of face you are gonna get from me, sorry.

Anyway. I just realized that I now own three pairs of maroon pants. Huh? How did that happen? Anyway, no matter, these are my cropped pair and I love them (though I have to unbutton them when I sit down... but that's likely due to the three pieces of pizza I had last night...oops. Hey, single parenting - don't judge!)

Wear it Wednesday: Plaid

As a refresher course, on Wear it Wednesday: each Wednesday we choose an item or style of clothing and each style it our own way.  Today... a classic fall pattern - plaid!

Karen says...

I really struggled with this one.  I have two plaid items - a long-loan skirt from Cyn that is a tad too big, and a comfy flannel shirt that is a tad too small (how weird, because it used to fit).  Decided to make the latter work.  Threw around four or five different outfits so that I'll be returning home later to the bedroom clothes bomb.  It was too casual, too weird, all of the above.  Finally, thought, hey!  Let's just give it a plaid touch.  So that shirt is now under a white shell and a flouncy skirt.

It all worked out well because two co-workers said to me today (independently), "You look so polished today!"  Three-piece anything.

Paloma says...

I've had this plaid shirt for four years (I know this because I bought it to wear for my older daughter's FIRST birthday and she is turning FIVE next week... WTF?!), and I always seem to forget I have it and then rediscover it and say "why don't I wear this more?"  So when Karen and I had our usual frantic "what are we doing for Wear it Wednesday?" text convo last night, I stared into the depths of my closet looking for inspiration, saw this baby and said "plaid shirt?"  Real rocket science there, folks.

Work Slog and a Bright Sweater!

Work has been consistently busy for many, many months now.  Which is great - I always prefer busy to totally slow.  Especially in my line of work which requires me to meet billable hours (can't meet billable hours when you've got nothing to bill!)...however, I feel like I have had no breathing room for awhile now, and I am ready for a break.  Thank goodness a Thanksgiving weekend in Palm Springs is on the horizon!

Ok, sorry, that was so not about clothes. Anyway - I wore a beloved Tippi sweater today because yes it is FINALLY fall!

Wear it... Thursday? Fall Florals!

As a refresher course, on Wear it Wednesday: each Wednesday (or in the case of this week... Thursday) we choose an item or style of clothing and each style it our own way.  Today... fall florals!

Paloma says...

So every once in awhile, Karen and I dress so damn similarly it's freaky.  Today was one such day.  I mean, obviously we both agreed to wear florals, but we did not agree to wear them with navy skirts, cardigans, and black pumps.  Sometimes our co-blogger ESP is so strong, that even weeks of not seeing each other can't stand in the way....

Last Week This Week

Last week, I IG'd this dress in an outfit that I wore to a deposition.  It was just the outfit, sitting alone with its clothing friends with no human to distract its harmonious simplicity.  I then wore the outfit to a deposition, and then got too tired and bedraggled to post the picture.

"If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?"  The next philosophy lesson of the day is, then, "If no one saw me wear this dress last week, then did it count?"

Of course not.  So here it is as the retread, with different shoes and different jewelry.  Woot!

(Oh, and: Forever 21 dress.  With pockets.  Totally a steal!)

Same Style, Different Day

When I got this dress in my Stitch Fix box, I was so excited about all the ways I could style it.  So its kinda silly that the second time ever wearing it, and I basically styled it exactly the same way as the first time.  Well, i subbed the necklace with earrings and added a cardigan, so I won't say its exactly the same. I think I just really wanted to wear these shoes (which were probably one of the best additions to my closet this year).

Paper Bag Monday

... for the skirt, not the lunch.  Lunch, actually, was with my lovely co-workers as we pow-wowed and state of the unioned out at Local Table.  This was later, when I made a glamorous trek to Target to buy toilet paper.

Confession: I've been trying to relive the 90's every which way.  Dramatic eyebrows.  Straight hair.  Burgundy and navy.  Everything but the Birks have been creeping back into my life.  And today, I've gone totally baggy with this loose-fit tee and paper bag skirt courtesy of Stitch Fix.  I had to get used to the look, so my trendy addition was the colorful scarf.

Also: going through a hair identity crisis.  I've been so used to styling it a la Real Housewives, and it's time for a change.  I want to do sleek and blunt, alternating with messy waves on an extreme side part.  Still trying to decide.  It's a daily source of frustration.

T-shirt: Gap (this would be better!)
Skirt: Stitch Fix (pretty similar)
Scarf: Forever 21 (love this one)
Boots: Zara (similar)
Bag: Vintage Coach (this modern one is great)
