Wear it Wednesday: Plaid

As a refresher course, on Wear it Wednesday: each Wednesday we choose an item or style of clothing and each style it our own way.  Today... a classic fall pattern - plaid!

Karen says...

I really struggled with this one.  I have two plaid items - a long-loan skirt from Cyn that is a tad too big, and a comfy flannel shirt that is a tad too small (how weird, because it used to fit).  Decided to make the latter work.  Threw around four or five different outfits so that I'll be returning home later to the bedroom clothes bomb.  It was too casual, too weird, all of the above.  Finally, thought, hey!  Let's just give it a plaid touch.  So that shirt is now under a white shell and a flouncy skirt.

It all worked out well because two co-workers said to me today (independently), "You look so polished today!"  Three-piece anything.

Paloma says...

I've had this plaid shirt for four years (I know this because I bought it to wear for my older daughter's FIRST birthday and she is turning FIVE next week... WTF?!), and I always seem to forget I have it and then rediscover it and say "why don't I wear this more?"  So when Karen and I had our usual frantic "what are we doing for Wear it Wednesday?" text convo last night, I stared into the depths of my closet looking for inspiration, saw this baby and said "plaid shirt?"  Real rocket science there, folks.

Work Slog and a Bright Sweater!

Work has been consistently busy for many, many months now.  Which is great - I always prefer busy to totally slow.  Especially in my line of work which requires me to meet billable hours (can't meet billable hours when you've got nothing to bill!)...however, I feel like I have had no breathing room for awhile now, and I am ready for a break.  Thank goodness a Thanksgiving weekend in Palm Springs is on the horizon!
Ok, sorry, that was so not about clothes. Anyway - I wore a beloved Tippi sweater today because yes it is FINALLY fall!
Sweater: J.Crew (lots of fun colors here - and 25% off today!)
Skirt: Forever 21 (similar here and here)

Post-Weekend Camouflage

What to do when you spent a weekend eating rich and varied foods, and then ate a bunch of Chinese food for good measure?  You choose a loose-fit shirt on Monday, skinny pants, and sky-high shoes to create the illusion that you're not a little butterball of indulgent weekend fun.

Wear it... Thursday? Fall Florals!

As a refresher course, on Wear it Wednesday: each Wednesday (or in the case of this week... Thursday) we choose an item or style of clothing and each style it our own way.  Today... fall florals!

Paloma says...

So every once in awhile, Karen and I dress so damn similarly it's freaky.  Today was one such day.  I mean, obviously we both agreed to wear florals, but we did not agree to wear them with navy skirts, cardigans, and black pumps.  Sometimes our co-blogger ESP is so strong, that even weeks of not seeing each other can't stand in the way....

Cardigan: J.Crew (similar)
Top: Forever 21 (similar)
Skirt: Target

Karen says...

I wore this outfit on Wednesday, which was posted on Thursday, and which I'm editing on Tuesday.  It has been that crazy of a week!

All I have to say is - unbelievable similarity!

Blouse: Forever 21 (super similar!)
Skirt: Martin + Osa (RIP!) (similar)

Last Week This Week

Last week, I IG'd this dress in an outfit that I wore to a deposition.  It was just the outfit, sitting alone with its clothing friends with no human to distract its harmonious simplicity.  I then wore the outfit to a deposition, and then got too tired and bedraggled to post the picture.

"If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?"  The next philosophy lesson of the day is, then, "If no one saw me wear this dress last week, then did it count?"

Of course not.  So here it is as the retread, with different shoes and different jewelry.  Woot!

(Oh, and: Forever 21 dress.  With pockets.  Totally a steal!)

Same Style, Different Day

When I got this dress in my Stitch Fix box, I was so excited about all the ways I could style it.  So its kinda silly that the second time ever wearing it, and I basically styled it exactly the same way as the first time.  Well, i subbed the necklace with earrings and added a cardigan, so I won't say its exactly the same. I think I just really wanted to wear these shoes (which were probably one of the best additions to my closet this year).

Paper Bag Monday

... for the skirt, not the lunch.  Lunch, actually, was with my lovely co-workers as we pow-wowed and state of the unioned out at Local Table.  This was later, when I made a glamorous trek to Target to buy toilet paper.

Confession: I've been trying to relive the 90's every which way.  Dramatic eyebrows.  Straight hair.  Burgundy and navy.  Everything but the Birks have been creeping back into my life.  And today, I've gone totally baggy with this loose-fit tee and paper bag skirt courtesy of Stitch Fix.  I had to get used to the look, so my trendy addition was the colorful scarf.

Also: going through a hair identity crisis.  I've been so used to styling it a la Real Housewives, and it's time for a change.  I want to do sleek and blunt, alternating with messy waves on an extreme side part.  Still trying to decide.  It's a daily source of frustration.

Wear It Wednesday: Blazer

As a refresher course, on Wear it Wednesday: each Wednesday we choose an item or style of clothing and each style it our own way.  Today... a work wear classic: the blazer!

Karen says....

Our routine for the last four weeks since the inception of #WearItWednesday (haha) is a text exchange that goes something like this, on a Tuesday night at 9:30 pm:

One of us: What are we doing for WIW?
The other: Oh, I almost forgot!  Stripes?
One of us:  I already wore stripes this week.
The other:  I have a deposition tomorrow... can't decide.
One of us:  Blazer then?
The other:  Works for me.

And aside from this being the exciting, behind-the-scenes look you were dying to know about, it's a testament to how our dress is truly function first.  What we've already done.  What's going on the next day.  Who's going casual.  I swear, without this project of ours, I'd seriously wear black every day with the same pet pieces like (currently) the 3.1 Phillip Lim clutch and (endlessly) my Sole Society heels.

So, on this Wednesday, I had a morning deposition and then raced it back to the office for more odds and ends.  Basic black, all the way, but this jacket has some fun detail under the collar and cuffs.  A pop of pattern and then of blue, and I'm all set!

Blazer: Maison Scotch (similar)
Top: Madewell (similar)
Skirt: LOFT
Heels: Sole Society (similar)
Tote: Cole Haan (similar in shape and function; my dream splurge)
Bag: Zara (this, betterbest

Paloma says...

Sporting my Miami Vice blazer today! This blazer is definitely a bit loud, but its also made of sweatshirt material, which is awesome.  This is good, because I normally have an aversion to blazers since I find them to be not super comfy.  Sure, they add a certain structure and professionalism to any outfit, and I love how they look.  However, they always make me think of court appearances. And they are also not nearly as cozy as a nice cardigan. Thus, sweatshirt blazer to the rescue!

Also, I just realized that my skirt is also basically made of sweatshirt material. No wonder I just feel like taking a nap today!

Failed Styling

Today I'm styling this Stitch Fix top which I love but which I always seem to style wrong. Seriously every time I've worn it I have not been happy with the outfit.  I think what's throwing me off here are the shoes - maybe should have stuck with basic black.

Non-Grumpy Face

Only two of my co-workers know about my blog.  They are supportive but they also tease me about it - because, well, taking pictures of myself in my office and then posting them on the internet is a little strange.  Anyway, one such co-worker (you know who you are...) told me I have my "grumpy" face on in all my blog pictures. Really?!  I guess it just goes to show no one has any idea what they really look like.  So anyhoo... here is my effort at a more happy face.... satisfied, you-know-who? (fyi, I think this looks exactly the same as every other pic I post - i.e., I don't think I was successful).

Struggling a bit today, with an early court appearance, not enough sleep, and a list a thousand miles long.  Days like today, I am grateful for makeup! Speaking of which - this primer + this blush = my new secret weapon for looking awake and dewy when in fact I am very much not.

Wear it Wednesday: Polka Dot Cardigan

As a refresher course on Wear it Wednesday: each Wednesday we choose an item or style of clothing and each style it our own way.  Today.... an oh-so-versatile black and white polka dot cardigan!

Paloma says...

Love this cute cardigan - and love the endless possibilities for remixing it.  Nothing is quite as remix-able as black and white pieces!

That said, I struggled with how to style it for "WIW" because I was overwhelmed with the possibility! In the end, I decided to use one of my new birthday items that I haven't busted out yet - these maroon pants. Maroon pants have been on trend since last year at least, but as usual I am late to the party.

Cardigan: Target
Tank: Gap
Pants: The Limited
Necklace: J.Crew Factory (similar)

 Karen says...

We were totally giggling last week as we stood in the checkout line together holding these cardigans.  "Twinsies!" Paloma cheered in a sticky-sweet voice.  Yeah, it was definitely funny buying the same cardigan - together - but we think it's going to be kind of hilarious and awesome to see how we style the same piece, on top of just doing similar themes and looks, for this "Wear It Wednesday" project.  (It might be easier, too, than wearing 30 for 30...)

So, looks like we stuck to the same thing - white, black, and a rose tone.  I was also stumped: one on end, too many options; on the other end, so predictable to go plain pencil skirt with poppy cardigan.  In the end, I tried to just go for some girly chic and super basic.

The choco side of my clutch looks like plum, so again I feel that Paloma and I are indeed kinda twinsy.

Dress: H&M (Love this similar!)
Cardigan: Target
Clutch: 3.1 Phillip Lim (another splurge)
Heels: Zara (peeptoe would be nice as well)
Sunglasses: Zara (love these!)

Chambray and Free Shoes!

I'm oppressively busy today, but I loved my outfit! For someone who shied away from chambray at work up until like two months ago, I sure am embracing it now! Also, I love these new shoes, which I purchased on eBay with money I earned on eBay for selling some other shoes that I never wore. So... free shoes!

All Dressed Up and Nowhere to Go

Funny story. I got up this morning, got dressed, even curled my hair for the first time in weeks, packed my lunch, drove to work, parked my car, walked to my building, and was waiting for the elevator when I realized... I left my laptop at home.  Groan.  I think this picture (snapped when I got home and before I changed into sweats so I could post it here because hey, at least someone gets to see it) accurately captures my annoyance with the circumstances.

Blouse: Target (many years old, here is a pretty darn good alternative)
Skirt: J.Crew (many, many, many years old - similar here)
Shoes: Nine West (similar) (and an alternative that I am dying to buy...damn resolution of no shopping....)

Forever 21 + Couture

The best weekdays are Friday, and the best Fridays are when we get to lunch, shop, and blog together!

Totally accidental (except that it happens all the time), but we dressed similarly again, accenting our Forever 21 and mall faves with a tiny bit of couture... Here are the highs and lows...

Paloma says...

I am feeling bullet-points today...
  • This top always makes me cheerful!  Especially on a Friday!
  • These jeans are da bomb - my first experience with J.Crew Factory denim and I am oh-so pleased!
  • I really wish it wasn't going to be 100* this weekend.  WHERE ARE YOU, FALL??
  • Being at this Target shopping center with Karen made me wistful of the old days, when we used to work together and take pictures together (nearly) every day.  We can look around this shopping center and point out 100 spots where we have taken pictures together. Aw, memories...! *sniff sniff*

Top: Forever 21 (similar with peplum)
Heels: Banana Republic (alternative)
Tote: Madewell
Sunglasses: Prada

Karen says...

I didn't realize it until after, but both of our outfits today run the gamut of the shopping experience.  All I knew today was that I wanted to wear my boyfriend jeans, and then just pulled everything else out around it.  And I am so obsessed with my new 3.1 Phillip Lim clutch, to which I must devote its own post at some point, that it just came right along with the outfit.  It always delights me to wear something cheap, like a $5.80 tank, with something truly designer, like a $400 clutch (well, I got it for less, but you know what I mean).

Tank: Forever 21 (similar)
Shirt: Joie (similar)
Jeans: Current/Elliott (darker wash)
Belt: LOFT
Wedges: Sole Society
Sunglasses: Zara (similar shape by Tory Burch)
Clutch: 3.1 Phillip Lim (version of this)

Wear it Wednesday: Black and Berry

Today for Wear it Wednesday, we are styling black + berry!

Karen says...

Over the weekend, my co-worker Austa lent me her lipstick in a pinch.  She took one look at me and said, "You should try Chanel 145."  Well, that was just the perfect shade for a party.

I've been in a berry mood ever since.  Feeling very raspberry today, with the shirt, bright necklace, and Chanel 145, to boot.  Anything goes, really, with this black skirt with a faux leather waistband (on sale at Ann Taylor).

Shirt: Halogen
Skirt: Ann Taylor (splurge)
Shoes: Zara (budget)
Necklace: J.Crew Factory (similar)

Paloma says...

Black and berry (or burgundy, maroon, wine, whatever name you prefer) is one of my all time favorite combinations for work wear - mostly because its very simple and always seems to look pulled together.

Also - I am wearing slacks today which I have not done in eons! Must be the lovely weather we've been having that is making it finally feel like fall - 75 degrees is divine! Too bad there are 100 degree days on the horizon for this weekend. BOO, Southern California. Boo.
