Last Call for 2013

So we haven't quite figured out what v2.0 will look like, and we're excited at the prospect of figuring out something new for next year.  For now, here's one last post for the last casual workday of 2013.

Shirt: Anthropologie / Jacket: Spiewak / Leggings: Urban Outfitters / Shoes: Topshop
Bag: Rebecca Minkoff / Necklace: J.Crew Factory

Karen says...

This outfit might as well be a "Best of" for holiday retail 2013.  Almost everything here is something I got on sale during some holiday clearance, with the exception of the standard UO leggings and the Topshop sneaks, last worn on a sunny day in May.  Bag was 20% off at Nordstrom.  T-shirt was 25% off the sale rack at Anthropologie.  Jacket was 50% off already on sale from UO.  Necklace was 30% off J.Crew Factory.

Of all these steals, the jacket is really the most amazing thing.  I am so in love with it that I hug it to sleep at night (I don't).  Not only is it the ideal car coat, but it has a glorious faux fur collar, and I got it half off of an already sale price for something outrageous.  Of course, here's it is at its normal sale price, and it's still worth every penny.

Other than that, here are my plans for 2014, so far: (1) get hair done; and (2) find new pose.

Sweater: Express / Shirt: The Limited / Jeans: Gap / Shoes: Sole Society / Necklace: Forever 21

Paloma says...

Last outfit of 2013!  So lovely that my firm let us wear "work appropriate" jeans today (that's seriously what the memo said), because there is nothing I love more than styling jeans for work.  See, on the weekends my jeans are pretty much always worn in a completely un-stylish manner - sneakers, sweatshirts, flats, messy hair, what have you.  Comfort is king for weekends chasing two hyperactive children.  However when I wear jeans to work I get to pair them with heels, jewelry, and cute shirts.  In short, Casual Friday is my favorite.  So on weeks like this when I get a Casual Friday and a Casual Wednesday, I am a happy camper.  I miss the days of my old (and Karen's current) firm - Casual December and Casual August! The best.

Anyway, I digress. I am wearing this outfit as inspired by Ms. Witherspoon in this image. Love the look of navy on navy (er, denim) with red shoes. Just so simple and chic.

One Year Today!

Blogversary!  We have successfuly blogged our outfits for one full year, which was the goal come rain, shine, bad hair day, ugly outfit, whatever.  To commemorate, we have recreated our (almost) first and favorite post of December 31, 2012.

Paloma says...

One whole year! Wow, I really can't believe we made it this far into this blogging adventure.  But I have seriously loved it, even when at times it felt downright tedious.  Because the truth is, it's fun to have a reason to get dressed up everyday.  And I can honestly say that I can see how my style has evolved over the year - it's fun to really see it all in one place.  I was looking back at some pictures from January 2013 and had to laugh because there are some things I wore that I would never wear now.  Like, OMG, I cannot believe I wore the heinous Target boots in this post for as long as I did!

But anyway, more than that this blog has been a wonderful way to stay connected with my beloved Karen on a daily basis, even though our jobs tore us apart.  Looking forward to re-vamping the blog in the new year, and hoping it will be even better in 2014!

Paloma is wearing...

Cardigan: J.Crew
Blouse: Express
Skirt: Banana Republic
Shoes: Banana Republic

Karen says...

OK, so last week was a Christmas tragedy because we were too busy with work and the holidays to get any worthwhile outfit there.  But of course we would not miss today, the one-year anniversary of this joke turned project turned blog turned whatever.  It all started a year ago when...

Paloma and I would pop into each other's offices a gazillion times a day just talking about clothes, Bravo TV, and general tomfoolery.  We would invariably discuss each other's outfits and talk about styles and looks that interested us.  In fact, we seldom looked at actual fashion blogs.  One day, after all of the sartorial discussion, I jokingly said, "OK, I'm going to start blogging what we wear," meant to just be a daily catalog of everything we were dissecting to bits.  It took about three minutes to start a blog.  Of course, a couple of days turned into a week, turned into months, until we realized it would be fun to go the whole working year.  And then it made sense to have bigger photos.  And it made sense to cut out the chatter and go straight to the pictures.  And one tireless year later, here we are.

It's hilarious to see all the hits and misses across the year.  In the year 2033, I will access this page again from the microchip or whatever we all use for information and roll my eyes at some of my attempts at looking fashionable.

Karen is wearing...

Camisole: Topshop
Dress: Etoile Isabel Marant
Boots: Zara
Bag: Rebecca Minkoff

Until the far off future, here's what we have for now:

Trying Something New

It's Friday, ever the day to try something new.

T-shirt: Gift / Shirt: Maison Scotch / Jeans: Mother / Boots: Zara

Karen says...

These jeans do not look quite the way they ought to in photos, just a bit more purple or garish than they are in real life.  And yet, yesterday I was complaining that my pants were not blue enough for the photo.  Perhaps I should just accept that this is a weird outfit.

But it really isn't.  It's looks laid back and eclectic, but I can't get over how it just doesn't come across in the photo.  That's what I get for trying something new.

The shirt beneath, by the way, is an absolute favorite: I Heart Astoria.  I still do!

Shirt: Old Navy / Jacket: The Limited / Jeans: Gap / Necklace: The Limited / Booties: Sole Society

Paloma says...

I finally succumbed to the booties!  And I think I like them.  The key is to cuff my jeans above the booties, not tuck into the booties.  I think that helps.  And I think I need to type booties one more time.

Feeling great today since it's casual Friday, there is a weekend ahead, and a short week after that.  Love!  Happy Holidays!

The One-Day Storm

Once again, a one-day storm where everyone is at a loss for how to drive or stay warm.  The only solution appears to be to stay inside with a few layers on.

Shirt: The Limited / Sweater: Banana Republic / Pants: Express / Shoes: Jessica Simpson

Paloma says...

So this picture isn't cute (blurry face!) and the outfit is as boring as it gets.  But hell, I was comfy.  It was a perfect rainy day outfit.

Shirt: BCBG / Pants: J.Crew Factory / Shoes: Michael Kors / Coat: Club Monacco
Necklace: J.Crew Factory / Bag: Rebecca Minkoff

Karen says...

These pants are awesome.  They're new and they're cobalt blue.  This picture is not awesome.  It's blurry and you can't see the cobalt blue.

Again, it's time to sing the praises of J.Crew Factory and the bunches of necklaces, tees, and now pants I keep collecting from them.  This pair cost next to nothing with one of their rando clearance sales.  They felt great, were festive, and fit in the comfy-classic way.

Also, this coat is a 2007 purchase that just keeps giving.  It's a classic car coat - further confirming that most things with a 60's-era cut will work for all time.

Went A-Courtin'

Oh, it only took 12 months of blogging to get these two lawyers at a courthouse on the same day.

Shirt: Joie / Shell: Zara / Jacket: Maison Scotch / Pants: ASOS / Shoes: Michael Kors / Bag: My dad

Karen says...

The Stanley Mosk Courthouse is a funny place: it is this massive 1940's-era nondescript edifice, its hallways telling stories of Los Angeles scandal and justice.  But outside, there's a Starbucks as busy as a nightclub, hot pink benches everywhere, and a legion of Tai Chi practitioners on the grassy knoll.  Although the photo doesn't quite capture Mosk's many facets, this may well be our most official entry to date because we are actually dressed for the part, steps away from our central courthouse.  And it begs the question, how come we're not always doing this?

I wore these pants last week, but it wound up in a partial selfie.  So per normal Rules of Fashion, it's OK to wear them again because no one saw them.  Other than that, it's my standard shirt + shell combo with black separates.  It was not easy wearing these layers, because LA suddenly decided to have 80-degree weather again.

A note on Paloma's bag - the greatest testament to fashion synergy is owning the same thing.  I instantly fell in love with Paloma's bag, then realized, oh yeah, I have the same one.  But it kinda looks so much better with her.  After the admiration, I was so relieved when I realized that I didn't have to go buy one myself.

Shirt: Express / Suit: The Limited / Shoes: Enzo Angiolini / Necklace: gift form the hub / Bag: Liz Claiborne

Paloma says...

First of all, I absolutely love that Karen and I were able to meet up at court for a coffee and a photo - though I'm shocked that this is the first time we've ever been able to do it.  Wish she could join me on all my court appearances! :)

Also, fun story about this bag.  Karen has the same one, and I've been obsessed with it since I first saw it, and told her so on the daily.  She basically said "This old thing? I've had it forever!"  Since I couldn't find it in stores currently, I did what any totally sane person would do and stalked eBay, even going so far to set up several saved searches, which meant I got emails anytime "Liz Claiborne messenger bag" or "Liz Claiborne briefcase" popped up.  And lo and behold, a few short years later... here it is!!!  And it's every bit as amazing as I had hoped.

Back to Blah

Not the outfits.  The backdrops!  And of course, Mondays.  But hopefully the weather will get us outside and meeting up some more this week!

Cardigan: J.Crew / Top: Urban Outfitters / Skirt: The Limited / Shoes: Steve Madden

Paloma says...

First, I apologize that I look like someone peed in my Cheerios in this picture - so grouchy!  It was simply the best picture I could muster with my cell phone timer.  Selfies are lame.

Anyway, I like this color combo though something about the outfit feels off.  I think it's the shoes.  These are trusty old shoes that I used to wear almost daily.  However, they are now two seconds away from falling apart and look pretty awful.  I don't know why, but somehow I feel like basic cognac/light brown heels are so hard to find, even though to me they are the most versatile shoe a woman can own.  They are a neutral but less spring/summer than nude heels somehow.  Regardless, I recently splurged on these from Banana Republic (running through my entire seasonal budget in one month it seems), and can't wait to wear the crap out of them. :)

Dress: Madewell / Cardigan: French Connection / Tights: xhilaration / Shoes: Jeffrey Campbell

Karen says...

30 x 30, anyone?  I still love this dress dearly, and think it perfect for all seasons.  Which makes sense, since it's like a frickin' summer day around here again.  It was 83 this morning when I got into work, which made me realize the tights were not needed.

This outfit would have so much quirky schoolgirl potential, were it not photographed in a carpeted office among stale legal practice guides and 80's-era file cabinets.

Winter Uniform

Apparently, the winter uniform goes something like this: skinny black pants, sweater, boots.

Shirt: Maison Scotch / Sweater Coat: Banana Republic / Sweater: Banana Republic / Pants: Alice & Olivia
Boots: Zara / Bag: Rebecca Minkoff

Karen says...

Holiday hooray!  I love wearing sparkly stuff and this is the month do it unapologetically.  Today is our firm's Christmas do, so all the more reason to have gold sequined elbow patches.

I know these pants are like any other pair of black pants, but I love them so because they are perfectly fitted in a spandex/non-spandex tight/but not gross tight kind of way.  They are, essentially, the black pants of my dreams.  The only problem is having had to acknowledge my true size when it was actually two sizes up than what I had previously purchased from Alice & Olivia.  Yes, it is a designer with unforgiving sizes, but at one time I fit their unforgiving sizes...

So much work, so little time.  So much to celebrate, so little time!  Happy weekend!

Blouse: Express / Sweater: Express / Pants: Target / Boots: Steve Madden / Purse: Sole Society

Paloma says...

OK, so I swore I would wear my new(ish) booties today.  I was so ready to take on the bootie trend (which I've avoided for the past couple years) with gusto.  Alas, when I put them on with this outfit this morning it just looked... off.  I don't know if it's that the pants aren't that tight around the ankles or what, but I felt chubby and awkward.  :(  Going to try again, though. This time with tights and a dress.  I will make this trend work for me, damnit!

In other news, this outfit is easy and breezy and I would wear it every day if I could.  Had to slap a blazer over it this morning to take a picture for my firm's website, then back to unbuttoned under a grandpa cardigan for photos.  It's also nice that I was able to get an outdoor picture today without a coat - finally back to normal Los Angeles winter temps (i.e., 70 degrees)!

No Surprises

It's an outfit for any old work day.  Any work day at all for any day of the month for any year in time.

Blouse: Forever 21 / Cardigan: The Limited / Skirt: Target / Shoes: Sole Society

Paloma says...

Wow, I'm really pretty predictable.  Every day it's some assortment of The Limited, Old Navy, Target, Forever 21, and Sole Society. Or so it seems.

But the truth is, shopping when you are a working mom is primarily an online task, which means it's best to shop from places where you know how the clothes will fit - no surprises.  I don't want to have to squeeze a trip to the post office into my day to ship a return, no thanks.  And honestly, I am so damn grateful for it.  What did working moms do pre-internet?  Shop on the weekends with their kids in tow?  Sounds like a nightmare to me.  Although I will say that's probably how I end up with so many things from Target; I go there with the kids pretty much every weekend.  In other news, there are two stores/places that my 4-year old automatically recognizes: Target and Taco Bell.  Er, I think we know where Mommy has been spending too much time...

Top: Banana Republic / Skirt; Banana Republic / Shoes: Sole Society

Karen says...

Look.  I know that this is as basic as it gets for me.  I know that this looks like a 30 x 30 retread.  I know that this is Mrs. Claus Goes to Work.  But I was running late this morning and this felt clean and Christmassy and here we are.  No surprises.

And, I look like a sullen cow.  Look, I know.  I know.

Do Not Disturb

Selfies in progress.

Shirt: Theory / Pants: ASOS / Shoes: Michael Kors

Karen says...

Um, yeah, that's my big ol' face with makeup smearing from a long day of deposition-taking.  We have been so good this week about getting photos that I couldn't drop the ball now.  Plus, I love this blouse, though this picture does it no justice at all.  It is part of the Black Friday Bonanza I have spoken of from Neiman Marcus.

Hair up today, in an attempt at looking tough and/or polished and/or prepared.  Which I, er, always am.  And never am.  Also have found that the winter months make this window the best mirror ever, particularly when you throw a lightening filter in the mix.  I'm sorry, Wednesday Outfit.  You deserved more than this today.

Sweater: The Limited / Skirt: The Limited / Shoes: Jessica Simpson / Earrings: Banana Republic

Paloma says...

Although it's sad to go back to taking pictures behind my door after two days of pictures with Karen, I did make a discovery on my phone that seems to have made my pictures come out a better quality... or at least they look better to me.  So that's exciting.

Otherwise, head to toe in The Limited again today. This sweater was another crazy clearance purchase and I really like it because it's a nice weight and it's crazy comfy.  Also happy this skirt  - which I haven't worn in eons - actually fits better than it did when I last wore it (and had the zipper halfway undone but hidden under my shirt).

But I will say I'm realizing that my penchant for black/white/red/stripes is pretty strong...

Bundled Up

It's really cold in these parts.  For LA, this mid-50's stuff is really unreasonable.

Coat: Old Navy / Shirt: Old Navy / Cardigan: Martin + Osa / Pants: The Limited / Shoes: Target
Earrings: J.Crew Factory / Necklace: Forever 21

Paloma says...

Another day of layers and a coat.  But my blogging stylists convinced me the outfit looked better with coat, so here we go.

Under the coat, there are fun layers of color, including a yellow patterned shirt and a burgundy cardigan.  And of course, more Exact Stretch pants that I love eternally.

Turtleneck: Banana Republic / Skirt: Madewell / Shoes: The Limited / Bag: Rebecca Minkoff / Coat: H&M

Karen says...

I wore a version of this outfit a couple of weeks ago, with another H&M jacket, another pair of nude heels, another black shirt.  But the outfit is essentially the same.

I've had this awesome H&M coat for a few months, and now it's cold enough to wear it.  It was inexpensive, and everybody likes it.  And lately, I've been very into the all-black.

I guess this is all for now.

A Tale of Two Mondays

In one office, Casual December means jeans on a Monday; in a different office, it's stylish winter workwear.

Shirt: Vince / Sweater: Rag & Bone / Jeans: H&M / Boots: Franco Sarto / Bag: Rebecca Minkoff

Karen says...

Ooh, look how smoldering I am today, especially when I'm freezing my feathers off.  This is a super comfy outfit that is a classic study of high-med-low.  Overpriced sweater and tee, mid-range bag and shoes, cheap jeans.  Funny thing of course is that my fave item may be the jeans.

I know it's just a white shirt but you know how the fit and feel make all the difference?  That's how this ends up being a $100 white shirt, which I got for half off with a Neiman Marcus gift card from a Black Friday bonanza.  (I do feel that sharing the shopping process is just as important as putting together an outfit.)  Well, honestly, it was the only thing I could buy given the myriad of restrictions on the gift card, a cash back sort of dealio from meeting the $100 amount last week.  Yeah - a white Vince shirt is as low as you can go at Neiman's.  Yeesh.

Then, this Rag & Bone sweater with awesome velvety elbows was a $180 TJ Maxx find.  That is the only time, I'm afraid, I will ever have any Rag & Bone apparel since even its basic tees are well beyond the $100 mark.  Still crazy overpriced, but I have a real soft spot for Rag & Bone (who doesn't?!).

Despite all this, my trusty H&M skinny jeans are the eternal star with its edgy style, easy fit, and endless comfort.  The same jeans and boots from March of this year, Rainy Day Rooftops!  Oh, how I miss the blog's early days...

Coat: Old Navy / T-Shirt: The Limited / Cardigan: Express / Skirt: J.Crew
Shoes: Jessica Simpson / Bag: Sole Society

Paloma says...

It's a glorious day when I get to have lunch with Karen!  But wow is it cold.  We are back to the days of covering up cute outfits with coats, it seems.  OK by me since this coat is getting to see its first appearance on the blog!

Otherwise, it's a bevy of layers underneath, wool skirt included.  Taking the kiddos to the Americana in Glendale tonight to see the "snow" (it's actually soap that fall from the sky at 7:00 pm and 8:00 pm every evening), so there are jeans and boots in my car for a quick costume change later.

T-shirts, Jeans, Rinse and Repeat

Ooh la la - just another Friday in December!

Blazer: The Limited / Camisole: Old Navy  / Jeans: LOFT / Shoes: Enzo Angiolini / Necklace: Forever 21

Paloma says...

Its 5:00 pm and we had a holiday party for my firm at lunch.  I had a glass of wine and then came back to work to finish an assignment. So now I am out the door now and zonked. But here's how I looked today!

T-shirt: J.Crew Factory / Pants: Current/Elliott / Shoes: Vince Camuto

Karen says...

OK, I legit had a lot to do today.  Plus a team meeting, plus a few conference calls.  So not only do I feel gross, I just don't look cute despite these self-indulgent, er, selfies.  Other than that, I do want to show my awesome new t-shirt from J.Crew Factory and my awesome green shoes which never seem to photograph well.  Notice the asymmetrical jewel detail on the hem - love it so much!

Oh, and another window-reflection photo of my office and ugh, all the work that has to be done this holiday season!  I might as well be in the North Pole.

Ode to Gray

It's easy being gray.

Shirt Dress: Splendid / Necklace: J.Crew Factory / Tights; Xhilaration / Boots: Zara

Karen says...

More adventures from Chez Moi.  The tree is up, trimmed, and lit!  My team of elves arrived last night to help make this the most fabulous tree that a thirteen-year-old girl could have.  Well, that was not my original intention (as I am like, the age of a thirteen-year-old's mom :-( ), but that's the end result when everything on the tree is pink and pastel!  And decorated with purses and shoes.  I am nothing, if not consistent.

As for me, I am trimmed with a new J.Crew Factory necklace which sports all the colors of my tree ornaments.  And with my current favorite gray tights from Target, which I want to wear with basically everything in this horrid 50-degree weather.

Cardigan: Express / T-Shirt: The Limited / Pants: The Limited / Necklace: The Limited / Shoes: Sole Society

Paloma says...

Inadvertently head to toe dressed in The Limited today! Well, almost.  Modeling more of my awesome sale purchases today, including what are I think the most comfortable t-shirt and pants of all time. The tee is totally sold out presently, but the pants are the Exact Stretch line, and truly the best work pants evah.  Hard to tell from this horrid pic, but I was going for a bit of a monochromatic look in gray tee + gray pants.  Something about the two different tones of gray was really appealing to me.  Hm.  Maybe giving myself a bit more fashion cred on this one that its worth - its a gray t-shirt and gray pants.  Not super interesting.

Little Black Everything

Even streets and firms apart, we dress alike...

Dress: Old Navy / Cardigan: The Limited / Shoes: Jessica Simpson / Necklace: gift from my hub

Paloma says...
It's another bullet point kind of day.
  • Another day, another in-my-office-by-myself grainy selfie. Blah.  I long for the days of easy breezy afternoon coffee dates with my blogging buddy - I think this might be the longest we've ever gone without a pic together!
  • I bought this cardigan at The Limited during their nutso sales last week (I think I got like an entire wardrobe for $150, it was dabomb.com - hah), along with a few other things, and was a wee bit depressed to find everything was fitting a bit snug. :( Either I need to embrace the fact that I am now a "medium" instead of "small" or I need to do a few more Jillian Michaels DVDs.
  • This locket was a gift from my husband years and years ago, and I haven't worn it in ages because I broke the chain.  Finally got around to replacing it and am thrilled.  Forgot how much I adore this thing.  Especially since the pic inside is of me and him drunken and ridiculous.... ah, the days before children and passing out on the couch at 10:00 pm.

Dress: Ted Baker / Jacket: Maison Scotch / Shoes: Michael Kors
Karen says...

Another long day of depo!  Well, it wasn't super long, but deposition days really drain you.  With a nod to casual December, I wore an LBD under a new jacket.  Yes, the skirt is a wee bit short for a solemn legal proceeding ("that has the same force and effect as if you were in a court of law"), but I'm more interested in looking chic this month.  Haha.

Oh, I could definitely look better after a long day in a windowless conference room, but thankfully, black hides everything.

The Beginnings of Holiday Chic

And so begins a month of wearing outfits just a little bit more festive!

T-Shirt: the lady & the sailor / Jeans: Citizens of Humanity / Boots: Frye / Scarf: on long loan from Cyn

Karen says...

Well.  This is not me in the office, this is me right after work getting to the tree farm and bringing this beauty home.  However, I did wear this outfit today because of casual December!  It's a very eventful month workwise, so there will be many days in there where I will have to be in proper lawyer garb, suit and all (like tomorrow).  So I welcome all the other days to work in jeans, or work in something delightfully festive.  Though this is not a festive outfit, standing by a tree with a huge hot pink star screams the holidays, does it not?

Paloma is adorbs today - if only a meeting I had did not tear our coffee run/photo op apart.

Sweater: POL (from boutique Native) / Tee: Target / Pants: The Limited / Shoes: Sole Society / Necklace: J.Crew

Paloma says...

Bought this polka dot cardigan on an impulse while I was out walking in our neighborhood with my hub and girlies.  This boutique, Native, also has a location in the Hollywood Hills on Franklin, and I've always been curious about it, but never had a chance to stop in.  So, imagine my delight to discover their second store opened just last month right around the corner from my house!  And they have a little play area for kiddos next to the dressing room... makes for an easier shopping experience for mommy, that's for sure.

Anyway, the cardigan has been complimented numerous times today, as have my lovely red shoes. So it's safe to say this one is a winner.

First Day of the Last Month!

By the end of this month - we will have blogged our work outfits for one full year!

Shirt: The Limited / Cardigan: J.Crew / Skirt: The Limited / Shoes: Enzo Angiolini / Earrings: Macys / Bag: Sole Society
Paloma says...

  • Remember this skirt? And how I lamented that it was too big and frumpy on me after I lost the baby weight? Well after some ebay stalking, I was able to find the exact skirt in the proper size! Happy day!
  • I have been lusting after this bag for just about ever.  And I always hesitated to pull the trigger because I have my trusty, tried-and-true Coach Candace Legacy Tote that I adore and do I really need another bag? But when Sole Society ran a 33% off sale this week (and they never have sales), I decided that yes, it had to be mine. Hence the picture of me carrying a bag while standing in my office by myself. (Not something I usually do because that would be weird).
  • This picture is grainy and horrible quality. Boo.
  • Bullet point blogging. I like it.

Dress: Club Monaco / Shoes: Vince Camuto

Karen says...

Well, this outfit looks terribly uninteresting here because my hunter green shoes did not quite come out.  But in person, the pop of green really helps.  I also had on a pink cardigan, but decided that would be too much altogether for the photo, though the cardigan is quite necessary when venturing outside.

First of the month, and behind the door selfies are in order because it's hard to get motivated after a long weekend!  As it happens, I have casual December going in the office, so will take as much license as I can with a last month of outfits.  We will revamp for next year, but for now, it's another month of fashion fun.
